Bay Area Severe Burn Accident Lawyers

Often, burn injuries are deeper than what’s visible on the skin.

The pain, scarring and disfigurement caused by burns may cause emotional trauma such as depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Burn survivors must endure a long, difficult recovery that often includes numerous surgical and cosmetic procedures, physical rehabilitation, pain management and psychotherapy.

People who suffer serious burn injuries may spend weeks or months in the hospital and rehabilitation centers, and the medical costs alone can be enormous. The additional loss of income and job-related benefits can add to the total cost of the injury, leaving the injured person believing their return to normalcy is insurmountable. Without compensation, it is unlikely that most people can afford these expenses.

This is where our exceptional team of personal injury lawyers can help.

Types of Burns

Not all burns are created equal. Burns are classified according to the degree of damage (first-, second-, third- or fourth-degree burns) and the amount of skin area that is affected. The injuries may be classified as follows:

  • Minor burns – First- or second-degree burns covering less than 15 percent of an adult’s body or less than 10 percent of a child’s body, or third-degree burns on less than 2 percent of the body.
  • Moderate burns – First- or second-degree burns covering 15 percent to 25 percent of an adult’s body or 10 percent to 20 percent of a child’s body, or third-degree burns on 2 percent to 10 percent of the body.
  • Major burns – First- or second-degree burns covering more than 25 percent of an adult’s body or more than 20 percent of a child’s body, or third-degree burns on more than 10 percent of the body.

Causes of Burn Injuries

House fires are the most common cause of burns in the U.S. Other frequent causes include:

  • Scalding liquids
  • Vehicle accidents
  • Industrial accidents
  • Explosions
  • Defective products
  • Chemical exposure
  • Electrical accidents

People who are injured in a fire or explosion may also suffer respiratory injuries. In fact, more fire victims die from smoke inhalation or toxic gas inhalation than from burn injuries.
